MOONDIAL NEWS ::: EDITORIAL REVIEW MEMBER
Sabine Seymour was appointed editorial review member for the International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction. The International Journal of Mobile Human Computer Interaction will bring together a comprehensive collection of research articles from international experts on the design, evaluation, and use of innovative handheld, mobile, and wearable technologies. The journal will also consider issues associated with the social and/or organizational impacts of such technologies. Emerging theories, methods, and interaction designs will be included and will be complemented with case studies which demonstrate the practical application of these new ideas.

Sabine Seymour will lecture on Fashionable Technology and present her latest book at Ars Stage Foyer on September 4, 2008. In addition several projects from the class Fashionable Technologies at Interface Cultures though by Sabine at the University of Arts and Design in Linz will be shown at the Campus exhibition of the festival.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS ::: 2008 SYNAPSE ART AND SCIENCE RESIDENCIES

The Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT) is calling for proposals from media artists and science organisations to take part in the 2008 Synapse Residency program, supporting intensive partnerships between Australian media artists and science and research organisations in Australia and beyond. The residencies are available to Australian artists with experience in media arts practice and an interest in science. Artists from all technologically mediated disciplines are welcome to apply. In order to encourage early relationship-building and to ensure the best fit between artist and host organisation, a joint application must be submitted. It is the responsibility of either partner to establish contact with the other and to determine the best possible collaboration prior to application. Those with existing relationships are strongly encouraged to apply. Residencies of 12 or 16 weeks' duration (depending on whether the host organisation is based in Australia or elsewhere) will be supported. Participating artists will be paid a weekly fee, as well as accommodation and living away allowances and travel to the destination of the residency if required.

WORKSHOP ::: ANOTHER SIDE OF FASHION | FASHION FOR SMART MATERIALS

This is the second in a series of networking events, entitled Another Side of Fashion, a collaboration between Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and London College of Fashion, to explore the wider influence of fashion, and the potential synergies between fashion, materials science and digital technology. It is to be hosted by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the University of the Arts (UAL), the Creative Industries Technology Innovation Network (CITIN), SMART.mat and The Materials and Design Exchange (MADE) of the Materials KTN, and the Smart Materials and Systems Committee (SMASC) of the Institute of Materials (IOM3). (The first in this series, The Fashion Context, was held in December 2007 ). The overall aim of these networking events is to raise the profile and awareness of the value that fashion and design can bring to the development and commercialisation of new products and materials amongst the science and technology communities (HEIs and industry).

COMMISSION ::: B.TWEEN: MAPPING CREATIVITY

Manchester Beacon want to commission an interactive project that drives collective creativity to connect people, places and knowledge across Manchester and Salford. The commissioned project will use disruptive, open source or social technologies to maximise Manchester's creative communities. It will facilitate better communication between two or more social groups and provide tools to visualise this interaction. Four ideas will be selected and receive £1,000 to develop their ideas further. The final commission will be £25,000 in total. CALL FOR PROJECTS ::: THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL ART AND ARTIFICIAL LIFE COMPETITION VIDA 11.0 NOW ACCEPTING ENTRIES

One of Telefónica Foundation's main objectives is to promote the relationship between art and the new technologies. As a part of this goal, Telefónica Foundation is announcing the eleventh edition of the international VIDA competition to recognize artistic excellence in the field of artificial life and related disciplines. The competition is open to art projects that explore the interaction between "synthetic" life and "organic" life as a reflection of the field of artificial life. 572 artists from 32 countries have participated in the ten previous editions and prizes have been awarded to more than 100 projects which included robots, electronic avatars, chaotic algorithms, cellular automats, computer viruses and virtual ecologies.
VIDA 11.0 will award a total of 80,000 euros to winning projects in two categories: one open to already-finished projects and another as an incentive for production in Ibero-America, Spain and Portugal. The winning works of art will be exhibited, as usual, at the Telefónica Foundation stand at ARCO. The works of art submitted will be reviewed by an international panel made up by Mónica Bello Bugallo (Spain); Daniel Canogar (Spain); José Carlos Mariátegui (Peru); Sally Jane Norman (France-New Zealand); Simón Penny (United States-Australia) and Nell Tenhaaf (Canada). Terms and conditions of the competition, which is open to participants from all over the world, are available in Spanish, English, German, Portuguese, Korean and Chinese.

Organising is underway for the fourth International Design for Engagement Conference to be held in the Autumn of this year. This year the conference will be take place on 19th October and is part of the NordiCHI Workshop programme at Lund in Sweden. The conference will again be a one day event featuring peer reviewed presentations, talks, demos and innovative modes of communication relevant to designing engaging products, services and experiences. In fact, anything engaging and relevant will be considered if appropriate to the audience. The format of submissions will be slightly different than in other years with timed slots being made available of between fifteen and thirty minutes rather than fixed presentations of papers. Slots can be used in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, exhibiting demos, making presentations, giving talks and interacting with the audience. The proceedings will reflect this diversity of deliverables by publishing traditional papers as well as photos, graphics, reports and text reflecting the presented work.The following topics and application of technology are indicative of the types of subjects that are particularly relevant to the conference. This list is not prescriptive, however, and any subject that tackles designing engaging products, services and experiences will be considered. The main themes are: Aesthetics, value-centred design and "3rd wave HCI", Games, ludic design and interactive media, Interactive arts, performance and time based media, Public displays, kiosks and situation, Location-based services, mobility and personal devices, New media and the Web, Product design, semantics and New Product Development, Innovative UI approaches including virtual and mixed reality environments, Value-sensitive design, ethics and user participation, Design methods for engagement including design case studies. EXHIBITION :::  ALLES GLEICH SCHWER BY HELMUT LANG

The kestnergesellschaft presents helmut lang – alles gleich schwer, the first institutional solo exhibition of artistic work by Helmut Lang, one of the most prominent and influential cultural figures of our time. Lang’s most recent body of work marks the logical conclusion to a constantly rearranging equation. Turning away from the physical body and its social articulation through clothes, Lang has created a series of objects that address the intersection of public and private experience as it is recorded through mythologies both personal and shared. “The continuity is that I’m expressing what’s important to me with the appropriate form, content and context through different mediums and other dimensions.” HL  Throughout the institution, new works that explore and develop the social and physical membranes between interior and exterior identities and spaces will be exhibited. Drawing on references as diverse as the folkloric rites of maypole ceremonies and the exploration of surrogate skin, Lang has created a series of installations, objects and possibilities that integrate an intimate knowledge of the human form with the personal mythologies and abstract arrangements of the world at large.

This special issue aims at highlighting the spectrum of research topics related to improving mobile Internet user experience, thereby promoting this research field. Our focus is on people, not on technical details per se. We are seeking user study results of different mobile Internet solutions and well-grounded analyses of the past, present, and future of the mobile internet in different parts of the world. We are looking for success and failure stories of the development of Internet services, devices, and software suitable for mobile use, as well as experience related to enabling infrastructures such as guidelines, standards, proxies, and connectivity solutions. The scope covers both making ordinary Internet services easier to use with mobile devices and designing Internet services specially for mobile use. The common question to be answered in all submissions is how to improve the user experience when using the Internet on mobile devices. The New European Media Art Network (EMAN) presents European Media Artists in Residence Exchange (EMARE). With support from the European Union Culture 2007 - 2013 programme the European Media Art Network will give 16 production awards to emerging media art talent to explore the creative possibilities of innovative content for new media platforms. The international residency programme has been running since 1995 and has worked with artists including Dane Watkins, Paul Harrison & John Wood, Martin Howse, Kypros Kyprianou, and Mike Stubbs. Media artists in the fields of digital media (including internet and computer based art, video and sound) are invited to apply for a two month residency in 2009 with one of the partner organisations: Impakt (NL), Werkleitz Gesellschaft (D), Interspace (Bulgaria), Vivid (UK).Please note that only artists with current residence in Europe are eligible to apply.
